Our Guest
Speaker is Mayor Michael A. Pizzi Jr.
Born and
raised in Brooklyn, New York, the Honorable Michael
Pizzi moved to Miami in 1988. A resident of Miami
Lakes, Pizzi quickly earned a reputation as the
champion for people’s rights. That helped him get
elected to the Community Council member.
When the Town
incorporated in 2000, he was elected to the
inaugural Town Council. During his eight years as a
Councilman, he sponsored numerous pieces of
legislation, including some to protect the
environment and reform the local political system.
On October 7,
2008, Pizzi was elected as Mayor for the Town of
Miami Lakes.
But, aside
from his Mayoral duties, Mayor Pizzi also practices
criminal and civil litigation out of his law firm in
the Town of Miami Lakes.
Pizzi holds a
B.A degree from John Jay College, a M.S. from the
City University of New York, credits toward a PhD at
Fordham University and a JD – law - degree from the
University of Miami, where he was First in his
class.
After working
as a Probation Officer for more than ten years and
serving on various federal Anti-Drug Task Forces,
Pizzi became interested in law, becoming an attorney
and serving as Federal Law Clerk to the Honorable
Barry Garber.
Pizzi then
moved on to become a labor lawyer with Morgan, Lewis
& Bockius LLP. He later went on to become a Partner
in the prominent criminal defense firm Bierman,
Shohat, Loewy & Klein. But he wasn’t satisfied so he
started his own law firm.
As an
attorney and activist, Mayor Pizzi has fought to
limit the expansion of rock mining in the Everglades
and around our water supply. He sued to stop the
expansion of landfills near residential areas. Pizzi
also opposed over-development across the County.
He attended
every Commission hearing as an opponent to expanding
the UDB. And he has represented dozens of people –
free of charge - who have been sued by developers in
SLAPP harassment suits. He has also filed suits in
Federal Court to protect the First Amendment Rights
of activists seeking to petition their government.
In his
career, Pizzi has been listed as one of South
Florida’s best criminal lawyers in South Florida
Legal Guide.
As Mayor,
Pizzi has ushered in a new era of cooperation among
council members and put the small Town of Miami
Lakes on the map with innovative initiatives such as
the first ever Peer Review Court, a pre-trial
diversion program unlike any other.
Also under
his watch, the Town Council accomplished many first,
including eliminating the county’s multi-million
dollar mitigation fee and lowering the tax rate to
pre-incorporation levels.
